The Root Down finally return to Exeter's airwaves with a new slot and a new show! This time Heavy Stylus and Pinks are joined by the mighty Little Kids and UK DMC champion Clever Monkey on guest mix duty - and what a mix it is! 20 minutes of beats, jazz, latin, funk and hiphop (including many tracks from the Little Kids back catalogue) expertly spliced and put together with some super-tight cuts and scratches - trust me, this is one you'll want to keep. As well as our featured record from the Stix imprint (see the review in the right column), there's a load of fresh material in the tracklist from the superb Resense lable, highlights being opening track 'Sex Machine' by Sono Rhizmo and Let's Stay Runnin by Soulique - two outstanding releases that have both jumped straight to the top of my current favourites list. And talking of favourites, the mix of reggae bootlegs and vintage hiphop in the last 20 minutes of the show is particularly heavy, and the broadcast ends with the epic and soundtrack-worthy 'No Groove Where I Come From' from a Melting Pot Music 12" that until recently had been gathering dust on the floor of the Blackboy Road lab (after falling off the back of my record shelf). Although I have absolutely no recollection of buying it, I'm really glad I found this record in time to clean off the grime and give it a long overdue play through - it's an excellent track in every respect.
